We’ve wanted to see Andy Murray competing to win titles for a long time, and finally, at the start of 2022, he has managed to reach a final to fight for the title in Sydney. The last final he won was in 2019, at the Antwerp ATP tournament. Andy has won the match 7-6(6) 4-6 and 4-6.
Andy Murray had just beaten Norwegian Viktor Durasovic, Basilashvili and qualified for the semifinals after the withdrawal of David Goffin. For his part, Reilly Opelka had beaten local Jordan Thompson and his compatriot Brandon Nakashima.
A beautiful and intense match awaited us, between two of the best servers on the circuit. The first set has been for Reilly, although neither has yielded any break point, so the set has been resolved in the tie break. A very exciting tie-break, since when Opelka was leading 5-1 Andy has recreated and managed to tie, but Reilly has managed to take advantage of his two set points and the second has taken the sleeve to his marker.
In the second set Andy had already analyzed the opponent in front of him well and he knew how to play him much better, above all he countered the serves better, thus canceling out one of the North American’s best weapons. And the same script occurred in the third, an Andy who already knew how to counter Opelka’s game and has known how to wait his moment to break the service once in each set and take both sleeves 4-6.
In the final he will face off against the Russian Aslan Karatsev and if the Briton wins, he will re-enter the Top 100 of the ATP rankings.
